Fabric covered terra cotta flower pots add the perfect personal touch. You can easily make fabric covered terra cotta flower pots when you follow these tips.
I love using terra cotta flower pots. I use them in craft projects, like these terra cotta pot luminaries, and I love painting them, like I did here. So, today, I thought I’d share all about how to paint and cover your terra cotta flower pot with fabric.
Why fabric? Because it adds interest, texture, and beautiful colors to match any decor or gardening theme. You can even use seasonal or holiday fabric.
And who says you have to fill your pots with plants? They make a great vessel for gifting just about anything!
How To Make Fabric Covered Terra Cotta Flower Pots
Don’t worry about this project being too complicated, because it’s not! You simply need to paint your pot, apply a sealant, use decoupage to adhere and protect the fabric, then let it dry and you’re all done.

Fabric Covered Terra Cotta Pots Tips:
Paint Inside And Out
For the best results, you’ll want to paint the inside and outside of your terra cotta pot completely using outdoor paint.
Use A Sealant
Again, for the best results, I highly recommend you use a sealant. This will protect your paint from moisture, peeling, etc. and also help to better protect the fabric.
Use Outdoor ModPodge
You’ll find that there are a variety of brands of decoupage on the market. I have only ever used ModPodge brand and have always had great results. So, I do recommend you use ModPodge Outdoor decoupage to not only adhere the fabric to the pot but to best protect the fabric.
Don’t Skimp On The Curing Time
Once you apply your final coat of ModPodge to the fabric, you’ll have to wait 72 hours before using the flower pot. Don’t skimp on this curing time. If you do, your fabric may not be protected and you’ll ultimately be unhappy with the results.
How to Cover a Terra Cotta Pot with Fabric
Yield: 1 Fabric Covered Terra Cotta Pot
Use outdoor paint, decoupage, and fabric to DIY Fabric Covered Terra Cotta Flower Pots. A fun way to create one-of-a-kind flower pots!
Materials
- 1 piece copy paper
- scrap fabric
- outdoor paint
- sealant
- outdoor ModPodge
- terra cotta flower pot
Tools
- 1 Pencil
- scissors
- pins
- paint tray
- paint brushes
Instructions
- Gather your supplies and protect your work surface.
Prepare the Fabric
- First, you'll need to create a template or pattern so you can cut out your fabric. Lay the pot down onto a piece of copy paper and roll the flower pot across the paper as you trace the outline of the top and bottom of the flower pot. Cut out the template you drew.
- Be sure to hold the template up to your flower pot to make sure it fits properly. You'll want the fabric to line up under the rim of the top of the pot and wrap around about 1/2" onto the bottom of the flower pot.
- Lay the template onto your fabric, pin in place, and cut out the fabric.
- Wrap the fabric around the flower pot and make sure it fits properly.
Paint
- Paint the terra cotta pot inside and outside (including the bottom). Allow to dry.
- Paint second coat of paint, if needed. Allow to dry.
Apply Sealant
- Apply an outdoor sealant to the inside and outside of the flower pot, just like you did with the paint. Allow to dry between coats. Apply 2-3 coats, per manufacturer's instructions.
Decoupage
- Once the sealant is dry, it's time to decoupage the fabric to the flower pot. Apply an even coat of outdoor ModPodge to the entire outside area of the flower pot where you will adhere your fabric.
- Wrap the fabric around the flower pot. Use your finger tips to gently press into place and remove any bubbles or creases.
- Apply ModPodge to the edge of the fabric where they meet.
- Use scissors to cut snips in the bottom edges of the fabric about every 1/2". This will allow the fabric to wrap around to the bottom of the flower pot.
- Apply ModPodge to the fabric, smoothing the fabric into place as you apply the ModPodge. Be sure to smooth the snipped edge of the fabric around the bottom of the flower pot and onto the bottom. Allow to dry.
- Apply a second coat of ModPodge. Allow to dry.
- Apply a third and final coat of ModPodge.
Wait 72 Hours
- Allow the terra cotta flower pot to cure for 72 hours before you expose it to water or use the flower pot.
Notes
- Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for using your brand of sealant and decoupage.
