Student Technology Support

Traditional Learners

Technology support for Traditional Learners students should start with the classroom teacher. If higher level supports are needed, the teacher will advise students on the next step infollowingfollow school protocol for 1:1 device support.

Teachers may find school protocol in the School Specific Folders of JCS Public Documents or by contacting the principal.

JC Virtual Academy

Technology and content support for Jefferson County Virtual Academy students may be directed to the student's JCVA teacher.

JCVA students may also use theJCVASupport Request Formfor additional support, information or questions.

Technology Training Course for Students and Families

The JCE Student Technology Tutorial is a publicly viewable Canvas Course. Simply use this link to view the course.This course has been made available to Classroom teachers in grades K-12, so it is likely that students have had an opportunity to view the content, however we encourage students and families to review the course for a refresher prior to District-Wide Distance Learning Days.

What is expected of student and staff technology users?

A: Information systems and internet access available through Jefferson County Schools are available to support learning, enhance instruction, and to support school system business practices. Acceptable and Responsible Use Agreements are provided to students and parents through the Registration Gateway. You can access these documents on the Student Information Page. You can also read the Jefferson County Board of School Commissioners' policy on Student Rights and Responsibility (Policy 6.301)on the Board Policy pages.

Internet filters maintain safe searches for student devices while on and off campus. Searches and activity are monitored automatically. Inappropriate searches are logged and reported to school administration.

TN Computer Science Standards

The Tennessee Department of Education Computer Science Standards are implemented in grades K-12. Many computer science standards are embedded in the academic standards of many subjects and courses. Additionally, the TN State Board of Education approved theComputer Science Standards for grades K-8.These standards include six strands, five of which (Foundational Concepts and Operations, Digital Citizenship, Analytical and Innovative Reasoning, Information Access and Storage, and Communication and Collaboration) are intended to be integrated within grade-level content with a goal of cultivating empowered learners throughout their academic career. The final strand, Coding and Computer Programing, should be addressed through explicit computer science instruction.

Digital Citizenship

Jefferson County Schools believes that it is vitally important to teach students the skills and equip them with the knowledge necessary to use technology and digital resources safely, wisely, and efficiently as they learn. For this reason, several digital citizenship resources are provided to our schools as they plan how to best deliver this instruction.

What is Digital Citizenship?

The Jefferson County Schools 20/20 Vision includes a commitment to collaborative partnerships and personalized learning paths that engage students and educators in technology-rich environments.  The skills, knowledge, and practice necessary to use technology and digital resources safely, efficiently, and wisely are essential to the success of students and educators. This skill set is known as Digital Citizenship.

Who is Responsible for Teaching Digital Citizenship?

In accordance with the Children's Internet Protection Act, Jefferson County Schools Board Policy states that all students will be given appropriate instruction in internet safety as a part of any instruction utilizing computer resources. For additional information and resources regarding this expectation, review theCIPA: Children's Internet Protection Actpage of the District Resources Page of the ITPDC District-Wide Info Notebook.

All employees and students sign Acceptable and Responsible Use Agreements that outlines the expectations of proper technology and internet usage on any Jefferson County Schools' device or account. These forms are available inRegistration Gateway Documents. In addition, Digital Citizenship units are provided through a variety of resources to further increase awareness and knowledge.

What Resources are Available for Teaching Digital Citizenship?

Jefferson County Schools recommends that teachers utilize the Digital Citizenship units designed and provided byCommon Sense Media. These comprehensive units provide activities that emphasize the safe use of digital media in today's society. Student safety is of utmost concern in our district. These activities are organized in age-appropriate units covering grade bands K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

Teachers are encouraged to use those portions of the Common Sense Media curriculum that best address the needs of their students and instructional design.The full set of free resources are available at no cost online atCommon Sense Educationand Digital Citizenship Resources.

Where Can Families Learn More and Find Resources?

Jefferson County Schools believes that a child’s first teachers are their parents. It is our goal to support and empower families in raising children who are safe, thoughtful, and contributing citizens in an increasingly digital and global world.
